On our second day in Salzburg, I separated from the group and went back up to the fortress to take a closer look around, while Sarah, Rich, and Ev hit the local stores to do some shopping. For me, it was an amazing time to see such a powerful fortress in all its glory. The fortress was mainly used for military purposes for defending the town of Salzburg. During its life, it has never been conquered by military force. Its only capture was done by a peaceful surrender of the Salzburger military to the great Napoleon. The fortress complex was very large, and very intricate. I could not imagine trying to wage war against armies that are holed up in this structure. Upon leaving Salzburg in the early afternoon, we made our way towards our next destination of Passau, Germany. It was a pleasant drive mostly off the autobahn, allowing us to see the German countryside. After arriving and settling into our hotel, we found a local beer garden, ate dinner, took a stroll through the town, and headed for home to go to sleep.
